About us
Chef Jörg Fercher moved to the United States in 1987 from his home town of Carinthia in Southern Austria. He then moved to Dallas, Texas where he met his wife Cathy. Jörg’s Cafe Vienna opened in 2002, and it is in this café where you will find both of them working hard, with their sons Derek and Matthew. Derek has learned Austrian cooking from his father, and the Fercher Family works together to give Plano a taste of authentic Austrian Cuisine.
Jörg learned to cook from his mother who taught Culinary Arts in Austria. The restaurant is Jörg’s pride and joy, and you will always find him or Cathy there sharing the history of Austria and the country’s amazing food and beer.
About Carinthia
Carinthia (German: Kärnten) is a state of Austria, and is especially known for its skiing areas, and many beautiful lakes.
Carinthia is one of the most autonomous states in Austria. Older than the country of Austria itself, it has always been fairly isolated by its geography. Carinthians are known to be rooted and proud, and have a reputation for being extremely warm-hearted. The name Carinthia is by some thought to have even been derived from the celtic word “Carant” meaning friend!
Carinthians have their own dialect which can be difficult to understand if you are accustomed to formal German. English is widely understood in cities and tourist areas and Italian and Slovenian are also widely spoken in the south of Carinthia.

Austria officially, Republik Österreich, is a largely mountainous country of south-central Europe. Austria extends roughly 340 miles from east to west, and is bordered to the west by Switzerland and Leiechtenstein, to the northwest by Germany, to the north by the Czech Republic, to the northeast by Slovakia, to the east by Hungary, to the Southwest by Italy and Slovenia in the South. The capial is Vienna.
In the decades following its collapse in 1918 of the multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire, this small landlocked country experienced more than a quarter century of social and economic turbulence and a Nazi dictatorship. Yet the establishment of permanent neutrality in 1955 enabled Austria to develop into a stable and socially progressive nation with a flourishing cultural life that is reminiscent of its earlier days of international musical glory. Its social and economic institutions have also been characterized by renewed spirit of cooperation.
We are happy to be able to share our love of Austria and pride in our heritage with you through amazing and authentic food!
